Castine man caught with marijuana, beer in car, police say

ELLSWORTH, Maine — Police say a Castine teen is facing multiple criminal charges after they stopped him Tuesday night and found drugs, alcohol and drug paraphernalia in his car.

Matthew Lee Meany, 19, was driving a car on Foster Street around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday when Officer Chris Smith pulled him over because a license plate light was not working, Lt. Harold Page said Wednesday.

In the car, police found several kinds of beers, Page said. They also found more than 2 ounces of marijuana in multiple containers, he said.

There also were minors in the car with Meany, which had an influence on the charges he is facing, according to Page.

Meany was charged with aggravated furnishing of scheduled drugs for allegedly giving marijuana to a 17-year-old boy who was in the car with him, the lieutenant said. Meany also is facing charges of illegal transportation of alcohol by a minor, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a usable amount of marijuana.

Page said the aggravated drug furnishing charge is a Class C felony, which is punishable by up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $5,000.
