Distracted driver gets into one-vehicle crash in Waldo

By Abigail Curtis, BDN Staff

WALDO, Maine — A driver was taken to the hospital with back injuries Sunday morning after losing control of his vehicle on East Waldo Road.

Nathan Grass, 26, of Waldo reportedly told police after the crash that he had looked down at something in his pickup truck while driving at 10:10 a.m., and when he then looked back at the road, he saw he was headed into the guardrail, according to Deputy Benjamin Seekins of the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office.

Grass then overcorrected, and his 1984 Toyota pickup truck spun counterclockwise, careening off the guardrail on the passenger side. It then spun in the other direction and hit the guardrail on the other side of the road, Seekins said. The truck rolled over the guardrail and came to a halt, he said.

The Waldo Fire Department and Belfast Ambulance assisted at the scene, and Grass was taken to Waldo County General Hospital in Belfast to be treated.

The truck was demolished with an estimated $5,000 in damage, Seekins said.

No one else was involved in the crash, which is being attributed to driver inattention, he said.
