Dead River contest to distribute $10,000 to charity

PORTLAND, Maine — A heating oil company in northern New England is enlisting Facebook to engage customers and help distribute $10,000 to nonprofit organizations.

Rather than doling the money out, Dead River is asking users of its Facebook page to use clues to find 20 hidden $500 charitable certificates in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont.

The clues will lead to 20 hidden 4-foot-tall cardboard cut-outs of a delivery driver named Arthur. Each Arthur cut-out will be hidden in randomly selected locations across the company’s service area.

The five-week Share the Warmth initiative began on Monday.

People who find the hidden certificates can bring them to their local Dead River office, then they can select a local nonprofit organization to receive the donation.

According to Robert Moore, president of the Dead River Co., “We selected our Houlton-based employee Arthur, a 27-year-veteran delivery driver, to symbolize our Share the Warmth initiative because he epitomizes our company’s commitment to being caring, genuine, dependable, local and trustworthy.”
