STOCKTON SPRINGS, Maine — A Corinth man was arrested Tuesday evening after reportedly trying to break into a woman’s hotel room and leading police on a high-speed chase on Route 1.

Douglas Chambers, 43, allegedly had been trying to get into his ex-girlfriend’s room at the Rocky Ridge Motel, Chief Deputy Robert Keating of the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday. The woman called police and spoke with dispatchers from her locked room while Chambers was outside.

Officer Jessica Danielson of the Searsport Police Department was first on the scene, and when she arrived, she reportedly saw Chambers reaching into the woman’s room after having cut the window screen.

“Officer Danielson tried to stop him, but he refused to submit to arrest,” Keating said.

Chambers jumped into a silver Dodge Charger and sped away from the hotel, according to Keating. Sgt. Dale Brown of the sheriff’s office estimated that the man was driving 90 mph on Route 1 — more than 30 mph faster than the posted speed.

Chambers lost control of the Charger at the intersection of Routes 1 and 1A and crashed the vehicle, Keating said.

“He fled from the vehicle on foot into the woods,” Keating said.

Brown was able to follow Chambers into the woods and apprehend him after a scuffle, Keating said.

Chambers was arrested and charged with burglary, possession of burglary tools, stalking, refusing to submit to arrest and detention, disorderly conduct, driving to endanger, criminal speed and failure to stop for an officer.

He was taken to Waldo County Jail and made his first appearance Wednesday afternoon at Waldo County Superior Court, where bail was set at $750 cash or $5,000 surety, according to a court clerk. Chambers had not made bail by 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, a jail official said.
