BAXTER STATE PARK, Maine — The Baxter State Park Authority has named Richard Morrill as the new resource manager for the park.

Morrill joins the park’s administrative staff and will manage the 29,587-acre Scientific Forest Management Area, which is located in the northwest corner of the park and has been actively managed since 1978 to demonstrate exemplary and sustainable forest management.

Morrill was selected at the conclusion of a competitive process that began in late June and included nearly two dozen applicants. He has a bachelor’s degree in environmental studies from Bates College and a master’s degree in forestry from the University of Maine in Orono. He has worked in planning, administration and man-agement at the UMaine University Forests, Sterling College in Vermont and as a forestry consultant.

Morrill is a member of the Society of American Foresters and serves on the board of directors of The Forest Guild.

He replaces Carol Redelsheimer, who had managed the Scientific Forest Management Area since 2006 before leaving for other employment in June.
