Rende, Bower lift MMA by UMass Dartmouth

CASTINE – Junior Matt Rende rushed 16 times for 169 yards and was a part of four touchdowns in leading Maine Maritime Academy to a 42-0 victory over the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth Saturday.

Rende tossed a 27-yard pass to Nic Bourassa in the second quarter to put the Mariners on the board. He also scored on rushes of 84, 1 and 17 yards.

Jim Bower led the Mariners with 180 yards on 25 carries. Bill Wetherbee added 120 yards on three carries and Bourassa chipped in seven carries for 78 yards. The Mariners totaled 559 rushing yards.

Bourassa scored on the ground for his second touchdown on a 26-yard run in the fourth quarter. Wetherbee scored the Mariners’ final touchdown, a 59-yard run with 1:03 left in the fourth.

Wade Mondoux paced the Mariners defense with six solo tackles and five assists. Joel Chadbourne added six solo tackles with three assists. Josh Elwell had an interception while Chris Brown and Jonathan Thoms each had a fumble recovery.

Patrick Orlando led the Corsairs with 12 rushes for 89 yards.

Salisbury 84, Husson 7

At the Winkin Complex in Bangor, Salisbury (Md.) University piled up 552 rushing yards as the Seagulls drubbed Husson.

Coach Sherman Wood’s Gulls (3-0) led 49-0 at halftime, and five different tailbacks rushed for at least 70 yards, led by Dan Griffin’s 105 while Joey Jones had 103.

“I thought we were fairly consistent on offense,” Wood said. “We executed very well.”

Salisbury scored twice 55 seconds apart in the opening quarter, on a 16-yard run by Griffin and a 30-yard scamper by Bryan Woolson, who ran for 77 yards and two touchdowns on the day.

Husson’s lone score came on a 30-yard pass from Kash Keezer to Ben Foss in the fourth quarter. Husson was held to 215 yards of total offense while Salisbury compiled 708.

The Eagles (0-3) were paced by Byron Jackson, who ran for 42 yards while Keezer passed for 76 yards and Jack Hersom 61.
