Woman charged after standoff in Medway

MEDWAY, Maine — A town woman, distraught over family difficulties, was hospitalized Thursday after police said she fired a gun and barricaded herself in her home for 10 hours. No injuries were reported.

Lynn Hale, 55, was charged with reckless conduct with a firearm and taken to Millinocket Regional Hospital for evaluation, East Millinocket Police Chief Garold “Twig” Cramp said. A hospital spokesman declined to comment about whether she was still there late Thursday.

Hale was taken into custody at about 7 a.m. after surrendering to East Millinocket police, who cover Medway, and the state police and Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department special response and tactical teams, police said.

More than 30 officers, including 23 state troopers and five negotiators, spent the night cordoning her home on Dickey Moore Road, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said.

“They were using the PA system to try to make some communication with her. It was all one-sided,” McCausland said Thursday. “There was little or no communication with her.”

Traffic on Dickey Moore Road, also known as Old Route 157, and parts of Route 157 were shut down during the standoff, Cramp said.

The incident began when a friend telephoned Officer Steve Perreault and expressed concern about Hale’s well-being. Perreault knocked on her door and heard a gunshot. He immediately backed off and called for backup, Cramp said.

When two Millinocket police officers, three game wardens and Cramp arrived, they and Perreault saw Hale lying on the first floor with a handgun nearby. As they went into the house, Hale ran into a room and locked the door, Cramp said, starting the standoff.

Cramp said he didn’t know when Hale would be in court or what her bail arrangements might be.
