Father, son injured in Belfast accident

BELFAST, Maine — After a driver fell asleep or blacked out on Route 1 in Belfast on Tuesday evening, his car slammed into a telephone pole and then flipped on its top, police said.

Driver Andrew Munson, 22, of Belfast and his passenger and father, Stanley Munson, 52, were both treated at Waldo County General Hospital and released, according to a report from the Belfast Police Department.

The 2002 Dodge sedan went off Route 1 close to Perry’s Nut House and then hit a Central Maine Power light pole, breaking it in two. The car then flipped onto its roof, police said in the report.

Belfast police, fire and ambulance crews responded to the scene. The car had an estimated $4,000 in damage.
