BELFAST, Maine — A collision between a motorcycle and a Volkswagen Beetle on Tuesday afternoon on Route 1 caused one man to be transported to the hospital.

William Wilkie, 52, of Belfast, had turned his car left onto Route 1 from Northport Avenue at about 2:30 p.m. and apparently did not see William Staples, 64, of Searsport, who was riding north on his 1991 Harley Davidson, according to a Belfast Police Department report.

Staples tried to veer around the silver Beetle just as Wilkie aimed left to try to avoid the motorcycle, police said in the report. The bike was struck broadside by the car.

Staples was transported to Waldo County Memorial Hospital in Belfast by ambulance with a possible broken shoulder and pain in his right foot and leg. He had been wearing his helmet, police said.

His motorcycle had an estimated $3,500 in damage and the Beetle had about $2,000 in damage, the report indicated.
