BANGOR, Maine — Penobscot Youth Theatre, the student wing of Bangor’s professional theater company, is set to present the 1920s jazz-age musical romp, “Thoroughly Modern Millie.” Based on the popular 1967 movie, which starred Julie Andrews in the title role, the stage version of “Thoroughly Modern Millie” includes a full score of new songs and bright dance numbers. The Youth Theatre troupe will perform the musical July 29-31 on the stage of the historic Bangor Opera House.

The junior edition of “Thoroughly Modern Millie” — designed specifically to be performed and enjoyed by children of all ages — is a high-spirited musical that has all of New York dancing the Charleston. Taking place in New York City in 1922, “Thoroughly Modern Millie” tells the story of young Millie Dillmount, who has just moved to the city in search of a new life for herself. It’s a New York full of intrigue and jazz — a time when women were entering the work force and the rules of love and social behavior were changing forever.

Nathan Halvorson directs the production, with musical direction by Colin Graebert.

Currently in its fifth year, the Penobscot Theatre’s musical theatre camp is a troupe of students between the ages of 10 and 18. This season’s troupe of 19 performers from the Greater Bangor area includes: Stephanie Colavito (in the title role), along with Rachel Benway, Mary Clark, Anthony Colavito, Cara Doiron, Kaitlin Drake, Greta Frost, Nic Galinski, Lauryn Goodall, Emma Greenberg-McDonald, Marisa Grifasi, Conor Kenny, Tory Nye, Jaime Roy, Raechel Segal, Morgan Sorey, Devon Tull, Megan Ward and Elizabeth White.
