Fort Kent doctor’s license revoked

By Meg Haskell, BDN Staff

FORT KENT, Maine — The Maine Board of Licensure in Medicine revoked the medical license of Fort Kent obstetrician and gynecologist Ellen Michalowski this week.

The board found that Michalowski engaged in the practice of fraud or deceit, unprofessional conduct and habitual substance abuse. It also was concluded that Michalowski violated board rules and conditions of probation and demonstrated incompetence.

During a hearing on Tuesday, the Board heard testimony that Dr. Michalowski issued prescriptions and obtained medication using the name of another person, sometimes obtaining the medications at Canadian pharmacies.

In addition, the board determined that Michalowski prescribed narcotics for a person without establishing a legitimate doctor-patient relationship or creating a medical record.

In 2008, Michalowski agreed to the temporary suspension of her medical license until the board took final action regarding her alleged self-prescribing. The board had at that time received information that Michalowski had been issuing prescriptions for a fictitious patient and picking up the medication herself.

Before the temporary suspension, Michalowski in 2007 had accepted a reprimand and five-year probation in an agreement signed with the board. Michalowski agreed that during the probation she would maintain a relationship with a single primary care physician who would provide all of her prescriptions.

In addition she agreed to engage in counseling and participate in a physician rehabilitation program offered through the Mane Medical Association. This action was based on information, including prescription profiles and medical records, indicating that Michalowski was at the time obtaining narcotics from more than a dozen medical providers, including one she supervised.

Michalowski, who practiced at Northern Maine Medical Center, is a 1985 graduate of the University of Arizona in Tucson. She was licensed to practice in Maine in 1996. Before relocating to Fort Kent, she practiced in Presque Isle.
