Palermo man who crashed pickup leaves hospital

PALERMO, Maine — A man who was injured after apparently falling asleep at the wheel of his pickup truck earlier this week and was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston by LifeFlight apparently has been released from the hospital.

Stephen E. Aitkin, 54, of Palermo was driving on Route 3 in Palermo at 3 p.m. Tuesday when he woke up “just prior to striking the guardrails,” according to Assistant Chief Robert Keating of the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office.

He still lost control of the truck, which crashed and was a total loss, Keating said.

An official at Central Maine Medical Center said Thursday afternoon that Aitkin was no longer a patient there. Keating said that his injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.
