Man jailed after explosion at his Alfred home

The Associated Press

ALFRED, Maine — Federal agents say a Maine man fascinated by pipe bombs was making one when he blew off part of his hand.

The man faces charges of possessing a destructive device. He’s at the Cumberland County Jail.

An affidavit says the man told authorities he hurt himself Friday while filling a butane lighter at his home in Alfred. The man drove to a hospital for surgery on his hand, which was missing part of a finger.

Firefighters say they found pipe bombs and marijuana plants in the man’s home. State police say they found pipe bombs in his car.

The affidavit says the man later told a fire marshal’s office investigator he “has a fascination with pipe bombs” and made some Friday morning.

The Portland Press Herald newspaper says the man is expected to be arraigned Monday.
