Five things to do this weekend

1. Food

The second annual Maine Whoopie Pie Festival kicks off at 10 a.m. Saturday in downtown Dover-Foxcroft. There’s music, comedy, a whoopie pie eating contest, lots of kid’s activities, yard sales, a 5k race and more. Admission is $6 for adults, $3 for kids. 2. Theater

Penobscot Theatre Company’s Northern Writes New Play Festival will have performances at the Bangor Opera House all weekend, with new plays from playwrights from all over the world. An evening of one-act plays is set for 7 p.m. Friday, an afternoon with Maine playwrights is set for 2 p.m. Saturday, and there’s much more. Each show is $5. For info visit penobscottheatre.org.

3. Juggling

The Unity College Center for the Performing Arts presents renowned Maine juggler Morton Hansen and his show Falling Up, a contemporary take on juggling. The show is great for kids and adults, and it’s just $10 for adults at $5 for kids.

4. Theater and Music

Next Generation Theatre in Brewer has two great shows this weekend. Friday night at 8 it’s the Focus Group, the Bangor-area improv troupe that’s bound to bring the laughs. Admission is $5. On Saturday, a CD release from the JD Bros, aka Joseph J. Shaw and Dave Russel, who recorded an album of all original music called Songs of Uncertainty. That show is $5 too.

5. Pride Festival

The Bridge Alliance holds its annual Gay Pride Festival, celebrating the 40th anniversary of pride festivities around the country. The whole thing kicks off at 1 p.m. in West Market Square in downtown Bangor. A marketplace, a performance from the band Sam & Yuri, a drag show, a street dance and lots of kids activities are set for the whole day; admission to everything is free.
