3-year-old injured in ATV accident listed in fair condition

HERMON, Maine — A 3-year-old injured Friday night in an ATV accident off Hopkins Road was listed in fair condition Saturday at Eastern Medical Center in Bangor.

The child, who lives in Etna, suffered several broken ribs and a collapsed lung when the handlebars of the ATV struck the child’s chest, according to the Maine Warden Service

The child was sitting on the machine in front of Donna Smith of Hermon, Game Warden Josh Tibbetts said late Friday. When the pair attempted to climb a hill, the child leaned forward, grabbing the handlebars and inadvertently pulled on the accelerator in the process, causing both to fall backward off the vehicle.

“They fell backwards, and the child’s head hit her and gave [the adult] a bloody nose,” said Tibbetts.

The child was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. Under Maine law, anyone under age 18 must wear a helmet when riding an ATV.

Tibbetts has not decided whether to file charges.

“I haven’t come to that conclusion yet,” Tibbetts said, adding that he was “leaning toward no.”

Smith is a friend of the child’s family, Tibbetts said Saturday.
