Nick Arthers is new coach for Hampden

Former Belfast Area High School and Husson University baseball standout Nick Arthers is the new head coach of the Hampden-Newport Riverdogs American Legion baseball team.

Arthers replaces Jason Folsom, who stepped down because of the birth of twin daughters last fall and because of an NCAA rule involving his job as an assistant baseball coach at Husson.

One of the returning players on the Hampden-Newport roster, Josh Tardiff, is a member of the Husson baseball team, and under NCAA rules Folsom cannot coach Tardiff outside the college season, according to Riverdogs team manager Jon Perry.

Folsom, like Arthers a former Husson catcher, guided the Riverdogs to the 2008 Zone 1 Legion championship and a second straight berth in the state tournament last summer.

Arthers was the Northeast Athletic Conference player of the year and second-team All-New England Division III honoree as a senior at Husson in 2009, when he set a school single-season record with 67 RBIs and tied the school seasonal mark of 11 home runs.

Arthers also batted .416 while leading the Eagles to the NAC title and their first trip to the NCAA Division III tournament as well as a school-record 33 victories.

Arthers most recently was an assistant coach under Bain Pollard with the Steamboat Petroleum Legion program of Waldo County last summer.

“It’s a great program I’m coming into,” said Arthers, a 2010 Husson graduate. “And I’ve got some big shoes to fill with coach Folsom. But being coached by him the last couple of years, I’ve learned a lot and hopefully I can pick up where he left off.”

Hampden-Hermon can draw players from Hampden Academy, Hermon and Nokomis of Newport.
