UNITY, Maine — The Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association will hold its annual Small Farm Field Day at the Common Ground Education Center in Unity from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 22.
Small Farm Field Day features a variety of presentations, demonstrations and workshops for those curious about the tools and techniques of farming and homesteading in Maine, from experienced farmers exploring new enterprises to hobby farmers, homesteaders and gardeners.
This year MOFGA will offer more than 25 presentations and workshops.
Topics will include equipment and tools, pest and weed identification and management, guinea fowl and chickens, lacto-fermented vegetables, kitchen food safety, honeybees, alternative home energy solutions, blacksmithing and low-impact forestry. A daylong session will be held to build a Whizbang chicken plucker.
In addition to the workshops and talks, several vendors will be on hand selling seedlings, top-bar beehives, coops and garden tools. Lunch by Crosstrax Community Deli in Unity will be available for purchase.
Admission will be $2 for adults and free for children younger than 12.
The event will take place rain or shine. For information about Small Farm Field Day or other MOFGA events, call 568-4142 or go to www.mofga.org.
