Two arrested in robbery after Lubec standoff

LUBEC, Maine — A standoff at a home on North Lubec Road ended peacefully Sunday afternoon with the arrest of a Lubec couple on robbery charges.

Police arrested Nathaniel Myers, 27, and Jennifer Folsom, 27, after they surrendered to police outside the home. The arrests ended a search that began Sunday morning, according to Sgt. Jeffrey Ingemi of the Maine State Police.

State police received a call at about 9:30 a.m. Sunday from Lubec resident Bracy Ashby, 44, who reported that he had been robbed at gunpoint at about 9 p.m. Saturday at his Maple Tree Road residence.

“He said that $1,500 had been stolen and eventually he said that drugs had been stolen, too,” Ingemi said.

Ashby identified Myers as the robber and said he had used a handgun with a laser sight on it, according to Ingemi.

He said it was unclear on Sunday why Ashby had waited 12 hours to report the robbery. But officers began the search for Myers only, since Ashby had indicated that there was only one person involved.

Just as that complaint was coming in, another state trooper had stopped a car with Myers and Folsom in it on Charlotte Road in Calais. The trooper, unaware at that point that the two were suspects, issued a summons to Folsom on a charge of criminal speed and let them continue on their way.

The duo later was reported to be back in the Lubec area, and police from several different agencies converged on a North Lubec Road home at about noon.

“At first, they refused to come to the door,” Ingemi said. “They pretended not to hear us. We had just gotten the [tactical] team started when Nathaniel’s grandfather showed up in the area. He got on the intercom and called them out.”

They came out and were arrested without incident. The standoff had lasted about one hour.

According to Ingemi, the two admitted to the robbery, but said they hadn’t taken anywhere near the $1,500 that Ashby said had been stolen. They also claimed that Ashby had been asleep and that no gun had been involved in the theft.

Police found a BB gun with a fake laser sight on it that matched the description that Ashby had provided, Ingemi said. They also found a prescription pill bottle in Ashby’s name at the house.

Both Myers and Folsom were arrested on robbery charges and taken to Washington County Jail, where they remained as of late Sunday afternoon. The case will be referred to the district attorney, and other charges are possible in the case, Ingemi said.

The case is being investigated by state police Trooper Jason Fowler.

State police troopers were assisted with the search and at the scene by officers from the Washington County Sheriff’s Department, Calais Police Department, U.S. Border Patrol, the Maine Marine Patrol and the Maine Warden Service.
