Portland meeting with Japanese delegation

The Associated Press

PORTLAND, Maine — Maine’s largest city is marking the 25th anniversary of its relationship with a sister city in Japan.

The city of Portland is welcoming a delegation on Saturday from Shinagawa, including the mayor and chairman of the city’s assembly.

For the next week, the delegation is touring the Portland area and will take a ferry to Peaks Island.

The cities were brought together in 1984 by the work of Edward Sylvester Morse, a zoologist and Portland native who is credited with bringing the study of archaeology and anthropology to Japan in the 1870s. Morse artifacts have been shown at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and the Peabody Museum in Salem, Mass.

The two cities have exchanged delegations through the years.
