MACHIAS, Maine — Students at the University of Maine at Machias have organized a week of environmentally themed events in celebration of the 40th anniversary of Earth Day.
“Earth Fest” will feature movies, speakers, campus and community cleanups, and a Maine meal with food from local farmers.
The events include:
8:30 a.m. Saturday, April 17: Sunrise Trail Cleanup, Downeast Salmon Federation, East Machias. Meet at the Downeast Salmon Federation building for a trail cleanup followed by a barbecue. Sponsored by the Downeast Salmon Federation, Sunrise Coalition, Cadillac Mountain Sports, Jim Weston and the UMM programming class.
5:30 p.m. Monday, April 19: “Tapped,” Portside, Kimball Hall. A movie about the water crisis sponsored by the Green Council and Student Senate.
6 p.m. Tuesday, April 20: “Clean Air Cool Planet,” Portside, Kimball Hall. Presentation by Chris Stemen, senior director of sustainability with Aramark Corp.
5:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 21: “Sea Change,” Portside, Kimball Hall. A movie about ocean acidification and its effects on world fisheries, sponsored by the Green Council and Student Senate.
6:30 p.m. Friday, April 23: Relay for Life, Reynolds Center. An overnight event to celebrate survivorship and raise awareness about cancer research. Faculty, staff, students and community members form teams and each team member takes turns walking through the night to raise money for the American Cancer Society.
11 a.m. Saturday, April 24: canoe race, Palmer’s Landing, East Machias. Registration begins at 10 a.m. at Palmer’s Landing on Hadley Lake. The finish line is at Mill Park in East Machias. 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, April 25: Earth Day Celebration, Kilburn Commons. Vendors will be on-site and a Maine meal with food from local farmers will be served 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sponsored by the Science Club, Student Senate and Aramark.
