E. Machias man dies from chain saw injuries

WHITING, Maine — Police confirmed Monday that an East Machias man died Thursday or Friday from injuries he suffered while working in the woods.

Brian “Butch” Whitney, 63, of East Machias was unable to control the bleeding after a chain saw he was using kicked back and cut his right leg twice, according to Maine State Police spokesman Stephen McCausland.

McCausland said the man had been cutting wood alone off Spring Hill Drive in Whiting. He reportedly had felled a tree and was cutting its limbs when the accident occurred.

McCausland said it was unclear whether the fatal injury happened Thursday or Friday, but because a neighbor reported Whitney’s vehicle parked overnight in the area, it was likely the incident happened Thursday.

Maine Game Warden Joe McBrine had received the original call regarding Whitney’s vehicle on Friday morning. McBrine went to the scene about 8:20 a.m. and discovered Whitney’s body. Spring Hill Drive is a camp
