JONESBORO, Maine — The body of Charles “Leckie” Fagonde, 74, who had not been seen since last Friday, was found outside his disabled vehicle Wednesday afternoon. The car was mired on a muddy woods road just one mile from Fagonde’s Jonesboro home.

The body was found by two people who were cutting wood in the area, said Maine State Police spokesman Stephen McCausland.

McCausland said the body was found on the ground just outside the car. “It appeared he had bottomed-out his car several times before getting stuck,” McCausland said. “One tire was completely mired.”

A medical examiner was en route to the location mid-afternoon and an autopsy may be conducted to determine a cause of death.

At one time or another since the weekend, dozens of friends and relatives, the Maine State Police, the Maine Warden Service, the Maine Forest Service, deputies with the Washington County Sheriff’s Department, and members of Down East Emergency Medical Institute have been conducting a search.

Fagonde was reported missing after he failed to show up at the Eagles Club in Brewer, where he had planned to go Friday night, and then missed a doctor’s appointment in Bangor on Monday.
