PORTLAND, Maine – Senior Indiana Faithfull scored 23 points while Griffin Brady contributed 13 more as Cheverus of Portland defeated Edward Little of Auburn 55-50 in Saturday’s Class A state boys basketball championship at the Cumberland County Civic Center.

The Stags (21-1), who won their second title in three years, rolled to a 27-8 lead in the second quarter, then held off a pair of second-half comebacks by the Red Eddies, who finish 19-3.

Faithfull scored 10 of his points in the first quarter to help Cheverus build a 17-6 lead, while Edward Little would get within four at one point in the third quarter and six in the fourth.

But Cheverus would respond each time, and the Stags closed the third on a 14-6 run to take a 45-33 lead into the fourth.

Bo Leary sparked the Eddies with 19 points. James Philbrook added 12 and Timmy Mains 10.

Cheverus captured its ninth gold ball in program history while the Red Eddies, who haven’t won the title since 1946, lost in the state final for the second year in a row.
