FITZWILLIAM, N.H. – Pauline Betty (Kiritsy) Stevens, 59, passed away Thursday, Feb. 25, 2010, with her family by her bedside at Heywood Hospital, Gardner, Mass., after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born March 27, 1950, in Concord, N.H. Pauline grew up in Seymour, Conn., where she attended school and went on to Middlesex Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, Middleton, Conn. She first worked at Griffin Hospital, Derby, Conn., as a registered nurse and later moved to Fitzwilliam, N.H., in 1973 with her husband, Bill Stevens. She then worked at Heywood Hospital, Gardner, Mass., for 37 years. She served as interim director of acute care taking on the additional role of nursing operations and coordinator and supervisor of the nursing staff, and then as a certified oncology nurse in the Outpatient Specialty Clinic for the past two and a half years until the time of her death. Pauline, aka “Diddi,” enjoyed snowmobiling, watching her Red Sox win, feeding her birds, working in her flower beds, cooking, camping at Salisbury Beach, dancing and listening to music; she could also play the accordion. Most of all she loved being at her camp on Sebosis Lake and loved caring for her grandson, Gabriel Stevens. She is survived by her loving husband of 39 years, William D. Stevens of Fitzwilliam, N.H.; two sons, William C. Stevens and his companion, Melissa Vaillancourt and her daughter, Jasmine, of Fitzwilliam, N.H., and Christopher E. Stevens and his son, Gabriel and his fiancee, Lindsey St. Onge and her two daughters, Olivia and Brooke, of Rindge, N.H.; her father, Charles A. Kiritsy of Fitzwilliam, N.H.; one brother, Chuck and his wife, Anna, of Fitzwilliam, N.H.; two sisters, Terry Gustafson and her husband, Keith, of Fitzwilliam, N.H., and Sandy Kiritsy and her companion, Harry Damon, of Fitzwilliam, N.H.; six nephews, Brian Kiritsy of Flagstaff, Ariz., Kevin Kiritsy of Fitzwilliam, N.H., Gregory Gilbert of Fitzwilliam, N.H., David Stevens of Seymour, Conn., Matthew Stevens of Seymour, Conn., and Seth Stevens of Seymour, Conn.; three nieces, Lauren Gilbert of Fitzwilliam, N.H., Casey Stevens of Seymour, Conn., and Katie Stevens of Seymour, Conn.; mother-in-law, Betty Stevens of Seymour, Conn.; several aunts, uncles and cousins; one cat, Elvis; and a black lab, Buck. She was predeceased by her mother, Virginia in 2003; and father-in-law, William Stevens. The family extends their thanks to all the staff at Heywood Hospital for all the support, love and compassionate care they gave during this difficult time. Calling hours will be held 5-8 p.m. Monday, March 1, at Stone-Ladeau Funeral Home, 343 Central St., Winchendon, Mass. There will be a private family service at a later date.
