ACTON, Mass. and BOLTON, Mass. – Frances Linnea (Haggstrom) Collins died Feb. 16, 2010, with family by her side at Emerson Hospital, Concord, Mass. Frances was born Oct. 6, 1915, the eldest of four daughters, on the family farm in Monson, to John and Olga Linnea (Bjork) Haggstrom. She grew up attending Monson schools, sometimes arriving on horseback. As a young woman she moved to the Greater Boston area, where she met and married her husband, Norman Goodwin Collins, Aug. 14, 1938. After living in Wayland, Mass., for a number of years they moved to Main Street, Acton, Mass., in 1949. Frances was active in the Congregational church there as a member of the Service League, where she and her dear friend, Virginia Gates, co-chaired many fundraising events and church suppers. She was also active in Acton Women’s Club and Girl Scouts. Frances worked at Acton Library, was a clerk at the Polls in Acton Center and worked as a senior aide in Maynard for Minuteman Home Care. Among her many interests were cooking – she would read a cookbook like a good novel – gardening, knitting, sewing, reading and crossword puzzles. She was proud of her Swedish heritage and loved attending the annual reunion of Swedish descendants in Monson. She loved to travel and felt fortunate to have visited Brazil, Greece, Scotland and Hawaii, as well as many parts of the U.S. Frances was predeceased by her husband of 39 years, Norman, Feb. 4, 1978, bringing on the famous blizzard of 1978; and two of her sisters, Louise Johnson and Anna Virginia Uenas. She is survived by her youngest sister, Marion Smith of Dover-Foxcroft; her two daughters, Harriet and her husband, George Place, of Bolton, Mass., with whom she lived, and Susan Linnea Sturrock of Nashua, N.H.; a son, Stephen Collins of Fitzwilliam, N.H.; her grandchildren, Abigail Linnea Golliver and her husband, Tom, of Nashua, N.H., David Sturrock and wife, Heidi, of Amherst, N.H., and Cody Collins of Leominster, Mass.; two great-granddaughters, Hilary Linnea Edwards and Sophia Frances Sturrock; a great-great-granddaughter, Charlotte Linnea Edwards; many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends; and former neighbors, Edna Custance of Cape Cod, Mass., and Alice Duren of Florida. A celebration of her life will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, March 14, at Acton Congregational Church, 12 Concord Road, Acton, Mass. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Monson. In lieu of flowers, donations in Frances’ name may be made to the charity of your choice.
