NEWBURGH – Ethel Pearl (Hatch) Pelkey, 82, passed away unexpectedly Feb. 27, 2010, surrounded by her family at a Bangor hospital. She was born Sept. 6, 1927, in Newport, the daughter of Eugene T. and Flossie (Braley) Hatch. Ethel was an independent “Mainer,” whose focus in life was always on her family. She enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening, building rock gardens, painting on rocks, crocheting, quilting and was a great cook who was known for her awesome doughnuts. She will be remembered as a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Ethel is survived by her children, Suzanne E. Bradford and her husband, Richard, of Canterbury, Conn., and David I. Pelkey and his wife, Ellen, of Bozrah, Conn.; two brothers, Glenn and Vernon Hatch; two grandchildren, Justin M. Daigle and Michelle L. Pelkey; and special friends whom she thought of as family, Jenny and Merle Smith and their family; nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Ivan E. Pelkey, May 11, 2000; and by five siblings. A funeral service will be held 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 2, at Hampden-Gilpatrick Funeral Home, 45 Western Ave., Hampden, where family and friends may visit 5 p.m. until the time of service 7 p.m. Tuesday. Interment in the springtime will be at Oak Hill Cemetery, Winterport. Memorial gifts in Ethel’s memory may be made to Shriner’s Hospital for Children, care of Anah Shrine, P.O.
