LOWELL, Maine — New Fire Chief Rick Smart will be available to meet with residents from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. today at the public safety building to discuss his plans for forming a town fire department.

Hired by the Board of Selectmen on Feb. 3, Smart is crafting a proposed budget and plan to equip and operate a fire department that he will present to residents at a special meeting. No date has been set.

About 30 residents voted at a mid-January special town meeting to allow the board to hire a chief and to pay for interim emergency fire protection services from the town surplus, plus carry over any unexpended amounts into next year’s fire protection budget.

The Triangle Fire Department, which provided fire protection to for Lowell and Burlington, hasn’t gone out of business, but it no longer answers fire calls because of a lack of volunteers. Its few remaining members announced Dec. 30 that the department would be standing down until further notice.

The public safety building is adjacent to the town office.
