UM’s Labreck top performer; Masters, Williams win

BOSTON — Jesse Labreck of the University of Maine was named the women’s most outstanding field performer during the 2010 America East Indoor Track and Field Championships held over the weekend at Boston University.

Labreck, a sophomore from Oakland, won the high jump at 5 feet, 8 inches and took second in the triple jump (40-2¾) to help the Black Bears earn fourth place with 106 points.

Albany won the women’s meet with 168.5 points, followed by Boston University (162) and New Hampshire (107.5).

Sophomore Corey Conner was victorious in the women’s mile, stopping the timer in 4 minutes, 49.67 seconds.

In the men’s competition, sophomore Riley Masters of Bangor was among three even winners, claiming the 3000 meters in 8:14.66 to help the Bears finish sixth with 84 points.

Albany (205 points) also won the men’s meet, followed by Binghamton (138), Maryland Baltimore County (97) and New Hampshire (89).

UMaine senior Landis Williams sped to victory in the 55 meters with a time of 6.46 seconds and Matthew Toothaker of Newburgh claimed the 1000 meters in the heptathlon in 2:41.35.

Other top-five finishers for the UMaine women included Cearha Miller (2nd, 200 meters), Vanessa Letourneau (3rd, 800m), Jennie Lucy (4th, 1000m), Allyson Howatt (4th, 400m), Katherine McGeoghan (4th, high jump), Shaniqua Burgess (5th, 55m) and Allison Conner (5th, 5000m).

Tanya Simard took fourth in the pentathlon, placing second in the long jump.

Angela Starkus was the 55-meter hurdles champ in the pentathlon in 8.63 seconds, where McGeoghan was fourth. She also took fifth in the pentathlon high jump.

In the men’s meet, Jamie Ruginski took third in the long jump and third in the triple jump. Other UMaine men placing in the top five also included Jadrien Cousins of Newburgh (2nd, high jump), James Reed (2nd, 55 hurdles), James Berry of Orono (2nd, pole vault), Brian Martel (2nd, heptathlon long jump and 4th, heptathlon 55m hurdles).
