FORT FAIRFIELD – Mildred L. Hawthorne, 91, wife of the late Vaughan A. Hawthorne, passed away Monday morning, Feb. 22, 2010, at a Presque Isle health care facility, after a brief illness. She was born May 16, 1918, in Upper Kent, New Brunswick, the daughter of Cook W. and Fannie E. (Jackson) Cox. She was a graduate of the Andover, New Brunswick, high school and married Vaughn A. Hawthorne, May 23, 1936. Mrs. Hawthorne had been employed by several area businesses, including Woolworth, Fort Fairfield; and Winnie’s Dairy Bar, Presque Isle. Mildred enjoyed traveling, knitting and crocheting, and spending time with her friends and family. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Hawthorne was predeceased by her husband, Vaughn, June 5, 1985; one daughter, Barbara J. Denton, Feb. 16, 2003; and one brother, Ralph Cox. She is survived by one daughter, Betty L. Duncan of Limestone; one brother, John Cox of Bristol, New Brunswick; seven grandchildren, the Rev. Gregory Denton of Lakeworth, Fla., Michael Denton and his wife, Darlene, of South Dennis, Mass., Bonnie Lamoureux of North Smithfield, R.I., Deborah Tompkins of Easton, Robert Duncan and his wife, Rolene, of Las Vegas, Stephen Duncan and his wife, Meg, of Milford, Mass., and Rebecca Hickey of Presque Isle; six grandchildren, Billy Duncan of Washington state, Samantha Duncan of Milford, Mass., Amanda Denton of Townville, S.C., Cody Tompkins of Easton, Jake Denton of South Dennis, Mass., and Joseph Lamoureux of North Smithfield, R.I.; three great-great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Friends may call noon-1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 25, at Giberson-Dorsey Funeral Home, 144 Main St., Fort Fairfield, where a funeral service will be conducted 1 p.m. with the Rev. Gregory Denton officiating. Spring interment will take place at Union Cemetery, Fort Fairfield. A time of continued fellowship with refreshments will be held immediately after the funeral service at Veterans of Foreign Wars Paul Lockhart Post No. 6187, Presque Isle Street, Fort Fairfield. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may contribute in memory of Mrs. Hawthorne to her family to establish a memorial fund, care of Deborah Tompkins, P.O. 433, Easton, ME 04740.
