SWANVILLE – Joseph Edwin Dickey, 79, son of William and Alice (Nickerson) Dickey, died Feb. 19, 2010, in Bangor. He was born May 16, 1930, and was a lifetime resident of Swanville. Joe started dairy farming with a 4-H heifer project at age 11 and continued farming throughout the rest of his life. He was an active member in the community, serving on the boards of directors of Waldo County Farm Bureau and Hancock County Creamery, and as a committee member of the Farmers Home Administration. Joe was formerly a fire warden and selectman for the town of Swanville. He graduated from Crosby High School, Belfast, and later served in the U.S. Army Ambulance Corps in Germany. He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Joan (Clark) Dickey; their children, Janice Dickey of Swanville, Elizabeth and Keenan Doubleday of Ellicott City, Md., and Alan and Rebecca Dickey of Swanville; grandchildren, Jason Howie of Belfast, Joshua Beal, AJ and Austin Dickey, all of Swanville, Kyle and Zachary Doubleday of Ellicott City, Md.; and great-grandchild, Kelvin Howie. He is also survived by one sister, Madeline (Dickey) Stevenson of Unity; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. Joe was predeceased by his parents. Visiting hours will be 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 23, at Young Funeral Home, 31 West Main St., Searsport. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 24, at Swanville Community Church, Route 131, Swanville. Interment will be in the spring at Green Lawn Cemetery, Swanville. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Joe’s memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
