ELLSWORTH – Our beloved father, Philip S. Eaton, 92, died Feb. 16, 2010, at the Maine Veterans Home, Bangor. He was born July 5, 1917, in Ellsworth, the son of Earle and Winnie (Moon) Eaton. Philip served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II in England. He and Vera started Eaton’s Wholesale Candy and Tobacco Co. in 1947. He served as a former member of Ellsworth Jury Commission, city councilman and served on the Ellsworth school board for three terms. Phil joined the Ellsworth Rotary Club in 1959 and was president from 1962-1963. He also had 28 years of perfect attendance in the club. He and Donald Knowles were members of the club that established the Rotary Pancake Breakfast in 1963. He was a recipient of the Paul Harris Fellowship award. After retirement Philip volunteered for 10 years at Ellsworth Area Chamber of Commerce and 28 years for Ellsworth Housing Authority. He belonged to Lygonia Masonic Lodge No. 40, Anah Shrine and Irene Chapter No. 97 Order of the Eastern Star. Phil is survived by daughters, Joan Tate and husband, Dwight, of Otis and Debra E. Dane and husband, Mark, of Ellsworth; grandchildren, Kimberly Carter and husband, Paul, Philip Tate and wife, Lexi, and Kelly Dane and companion, Joshua Gillespie; great-grandchildren, Sage Tate, Shaelyn Carter, Tate Carter, Olivia Dane and Logan Gillespie; sister, Marion F. Bailey of Bangor; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Vera H. Eaton; and brother, Caswell Eaton. Calling hours will be held 5-7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 19, at Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth, where a funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 20.
