Casino proposal moves forward in Lewiston

LEWISTON, Maine — Residents in Maine’s second-largest city will vote in June on whether a casino development group should be allowed to purchase an option on city-owned riverfront property where it wants to build a casino.

The Lewiston City Council on Tuesday agreed to the question on the ballot. Great Falls Recreation and Redevelopment LLC partner Stavros Mendros said his group submitted more than 1,700 signatures to put the matter to voters.

The Sun Journal of Lewiston says if voters approve the question, the group will pay the city $150,000 in installments through the end of 2011. The group also would also begin gathering signatures to force a statewide referendum in 2011 on whether a casino should be allowed in Lewiston.
