BANGOR — Two traditional basketball powers set up a meeting in the Class D semifinals with quarterfinal victories at the Bangor Auditorium on Monday afternoon.
Top-seeded Schenck of East Millinocket defeated No. 8 Greater Houlton Christian Academy 75-43, while No. 4 Jonesport-Beals pulled away from No. 5 Washburn 64-41.
Schenck (18-1) and Jonesport-Beals (16-3) will square off at 3:35 p.m. Thursday.
In Monday afternoon’s opener, Jonesport-Beals turned up its defense in the second half after managing just a 26-25 halftime lead.
The Royals limited Washburn to just five field goals and 15 total points over the final two quarters.
Garet Beal led Jonesport-Beals offensively with 16 points and 10 rebounds,. Matt Alley added 14 points, while Justin Alley had 13 points and 15 rebounds and Andrew Beal scored 10 points.
Mitch Worcester led Washburn (12-7) with 17 points, while Jordan McLaughlin scored 12. Connor Fitzpatrick grabbed 11 rebounds for the Beavers.
Schenck similarly used a second-half surge to subdue a Greater Houlton Christian team making its first tourney appearance.
The Wolverines outscored GHCA 37-17 over the final two periods.
Jared Waite led Schenck with 21 points and nine rebounds, while Brandon Theriault added 18 points and nine assists.
Twin brother Eric Theriault chipped in with 11 points and Terry McCafferty scored 10, while Zach McLaughlin grabbed eight rebounds and limited GHCA 1,000-point scorer Chad Duff to just nine points.
Ethan Holmes and Zach Staubel also scored nine points for 14-6 GHCA.
