BUCKSPORT – Mary J. (Merrill) Johnson, 87, wife of the late Leigh E. Johnson, died Sunday, Feb. 14, 2010, at a local nursing facility. Mary was born March 19, 1922, in Boston, the daughter of John C. and Mary A. (Buckley) Merrill. She graduated from Dorchester High School for Girls, Class of 1940. After moving to Maine in 1946 she became active in community and youth groups, including Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts, the October Club and Bucksport Extension. Mary was very active in the St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church community and worked for many years as a bank teller in Bucksport. Mary is survived by her son, Christopher and his wife, Karen Johnson, of Bucksport; daughter, Mary Lee and her husband, Charles Rounds, of Albion; daughter, Lise Stanley and fiance, Erling Larsen, of Bayville, N.J.; a son-in-law, Robert Stanley of Milbridge; grandchildren, Betsy Thurston, Thomas Rounds, Monica Gatcomb, Valerie Johnson, Kyle Stanley and Andrew Johnson; five great-grandchildren, Amanda Rounds, Rachel and Taylor Thurston, Jenna and Kyler Wilson; and one special great-great-grandchild, Jada Bilodeau. She is also survived by a sister, Catherine Bauer of Hayesville, N.C.; brother-in-law, Gerald Johnson of St. Johnsbury, Vt.; and cousin, Katherine Grady of Boston. Mary was predeceased by her husband, Leigh Edwin Johnson in September 1973; brothers, John, Lorenzo and Paul Merrill; and sister, Louise Westphal. A celebration of Mary’s life will be held at a memorial service to be announced at a later date. Memorial contributions may be sent to St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, P.O.
