VAN BUREN – Robert C. Smith, 71, died Feb. 13, 2010, at a Van Buren nursing facility. He was born Dec. 30, 1938, in Portland, the son of Benjamin and Olive Smith. Robert was raised in Deer Isle and was educated in local schools, graduating with high honors in 1957. In his junior year he attended Dirigo Boys State at the University of Maine. He was very active in baseball and basketball, and after high school attended the University of Arizona, where he played football and semi-pro baseball. In 1959 he played professional football for the Los Angeles Rams, something he was very proud of, but an injury abruptly ended his pro career. In 1961 Robert married Meredith Tainter and together they raised four children until her death at the age of 37. He maintained two and three jobs to care for his family. He was a sales manager for W.T. Grant Co. for many years and also worked as deputy sheriff in the Washburn area for the Aroostook County Sheriff’s Department. He was also employed for a myriad of other companies statewide until heath issues took its toll. He will be remembered as a funny and intelligent person who enjoyed the company of others, especially his morning coffee crew at the local drug store. Robert is survived by his daughter, Lisa Brisette and her husband, Arthur, of Van Buren; granddaughters, Amy Brissette, Makayla Butler and Rachel Smith; and grandsons, Bryce Butler and Alec Smith. He will also be fondly missed by Ann Butler, the mother of two of his special grandchildren. Robert was predeceased by his wife, Merdith in 1977; and by three sons, Robert Jr. in 1993, Michael in 2005 and Gary in 2006. In keeping with his wishes, there will be no services. Arrangements are a service of Ouellette-Thibault Funeral Home, 118 High St., Van Buren. To leave online condolences, please visit www.ouellettefuneralhome.com.
