WATERTOWN, Conn. – Nelda R. (Grindle) Smart, 88, of Beach Avenue, died Friday, Feb. 12, 2010, at Waterbury Hospital. Nelda was born June 10, 1921, in Penobscot, at her family’s home on Togus Mountain, daughter of the late George A. and Iva (Leach) Grindle. She graduated from Clark High School, Penobscot, and proudly served our country as a member of the Women’s Air Corps during World War II. She earned the rank of private first class and performed aircraft repair at Bradley Field in Connecticut. She was a former employee of Wallace Barnes Associated Spring Co., Bristol, Conn., where she worked in the production department for many years before retiring. Nelda enjoyed spending time outside, was a devoted animal lover and had a passion for horses and equestrian hobbies. Mrs. Smart was predeceased by her husband, Claude Smart. She is survived by her son, Robert G. Smart and his wife, Anne, of Tarrytown, N.Y.; a granddaughter, Clara Smart; as well as several close friends and family members. Funeral services for Mrs. Smart will be held 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 15, at the Matoon Chapel of Evergreen Cemetery, Watertown, Conn., where burial with full military honors will be held.
