Medomak hangs on in furious finish with Presque Isle

BANGOR, Maine — Medomak Valley built a 13-point lead, then held off a furious charge by Presque Isle to earn a 46-42 Eastern Maine Class B boys basketball tournament victory Saturday morning at the Bangor Auditorium.

The fifth-seeded Panthers of Waldoboro (15-4) advance to Wednesday’s 3:35 p.m. semifinal against the winner of Saturday’s 3:05 p.m. quarterfinal between No. 1 Camden Hills and No. 9 Mount Desert Island.

Fourth-seeded Presque Isle closes out the season at 17-2.

Medomak Valley was able to weather the storm after the Wildcats rattled off 10 unanswered fourth-quarter points to claw within 42-39 with 1:34 remaining.

Presque Isle actually had an opportunity to tie it up, but Travis Dyer’s 3-pointer missed with 42 seconds left. From there, Isaac Greenrose and John Bartlett each made two free throws in the final 25 seconds to keep the Panthers in front.

Nate Ackerson hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer for Presque Isle.

Alex MacKenzie led Medomak Valley with a game-high 15 points and eight rebounds. Daniel Aubel added eight second-half points and six rebounds, while Greenrose scored all seven of his points in the second half.

The Panthers outrebounded the Wildcats 37-21.

Dyer led Presque Isle with 14 points and Keenan Eaton contributed 11. Ethan Braley chipped in with five points and six rebounds.

The Wildcats committed 17 turnovers.
