BANGOR and GORHAM – Stephen W. Belyea, 89, husband of the late Louise (Young) Belyea, died Feb. 8, 2010, at the Maine Veterans Home, Bangor. He was born July 20, 1920, in Biddeford, the son of Percival and Eulalie (Webb) Belyea. Stephen attended schools in Portland and Westbrook, graduating from Westbrook High School, Class of 1938. He served in the U.S. Navy three and a half years as an aviation machinist mate. He worked as a mechanic and service manager for Northeast Motors, Portland, before starting his own business in 1956, Performance Motors, Inc., Falmouth, selling and servicing foreign and sports cars. He sold the first Saab in the state of Maine. Stephen built a racecar from Alfa Romeo parts and drove a winner for three years. In the 1960s he sold Performance Motors, Inc., and built the Transportation Center, Gorham, selling new and used cars. In addition to sports cars and racing, he especially enjoyed golfing. He golfed at 157 different courses throughout the United States. Stephen is survived by his three children, Glenn Belyea and his wife, Maryanne, of Bath, Mich., Barry Belyea and his wife, Claire, of Waldoboro and Brenda and her husband, Larry Willis, of Brewer; his sister, Mary Cole of Windham; seven grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents and loving wife of almost 66 years, he was predeceased by his two brothers and three sisters.
