MILBRIDGE – Barbara G. Schuppien, 89, died Sunday, Feb. 7, 2010, at an Ellsworth hospital. She was born May 24, 1920, in Plantation 14, to Seth E. and Gertrude J. (Cornforth) Gray. Barbara married Fred H. Schuppien, in 1940, and moved with him to Seymour, Conn., where they started their family. In 1950, they moved back to Maine and settled in Milbridge. She was a homemaker and a member of Milbridge Congregational Church and Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion, Cherryfield. Barbara always had a clear mind and managed to maintain her independence throughout her entire life. She loved feeding and watching birds and was an avid gardener famous for her beautiful African violets. She is survived by her two daughters, Carol Schuppien of Westerville, Ohio, and Judith Schuppien and husband, Philip Brzozowski, of Pittston; her brother, Gardner Gray of Birch Harbor; her sister, Joyce Nash and husband, Ralph, of Milbridge; nephews, Mark Nash, Robert Gray and wife, Theresa, and Michael Ray and wife, Michelle; nieces, Merry Nash, Lora Gray-Cotton and partner, Derek Blodgett, and Melisa Ray Nelson and husband, David; several cousins, great-nieces and great-nephews. She was predeceased by her husband of 49 years, Fred Schuppien; brother, Milton Gray; sister, Marilyn Gray Ray; and nephew, Eric Nash. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 13, at Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Home, Milbridge, with Pastor Eric Kelley officiating.
