DEXTER – Dr. Malcolm J. Stewart, O.D., 87, passed away unexpectedly Feb. 4, 2010, surrounded by his loving family at Mayo Regional Hospital, Dover-Foxcroft. He was born Sept. 16, 1922, in Kelliher, Saskatchewan, Canada, the son of Harry C. and Winnifred (Loft) Stewart. “Mac” proudly served in the U.S. Navy during World War II with the rank of signalman second class in both the Pacific and European theatres. He was a graduate of Litchfield Academy, Class of 1940, and Massachusetts School of Optometry, Class of 1949. He practiced in Dexter for 47 1/2 years before retiring in March 1996. He belonged to a number of community organizations, including Masons, Jaycees, Dexter Club, Dexter Winter Sports Association, Kiwanis and Lions Club, and served as chairman of the school board. He was a member of Dexter Christian Church and American Optometric Association. He enjoyed many happy summers at the family cottage on Lake Wassookeag in Dexter and at their summer home in Prospect Harbor. He is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Joy (Webster) of Dexter; three daughters and their husbands, Candace and David Mills of Lisbon, Meredith and Robert Andrews of Hopkinton, Mass., and Melodie and Russ Batson of Springvale; a son, Lance Stewart of Dexter; seven grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Margaret and husband, Dean Logan, of Lisbon Falls; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his youngest daughter, Amy Stewart; and three brothers, Calvin, Robert and Harry. A spring graveside funeral and committal service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, May 14, at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Dexter, with Pastor Lois Field officiating.
