VIERA, Fla. – Larry Stephenson Payne, 68, died Jan. 2, 2010. He was born May 21, 1941, in Clendenin, W.Va., and grew up on the banks of Little Sandy River, the son of the late Eva Mae (Young) and Carliss A. Payne. He was a graduate of the radiologic technology program at Johns Hopkins Hospital and served on the imaging staffs of hospitals in Truckee, Calif., and San Francisco. For many years he was imaging manager and director of clinical services at Blue Hill Memorial Hospital. He served as food service supervisor at Marshall Health Care Facility, Machias, before finishing his career in X-ray technology and ultrasonography at Downeast Community Hospital, Machias, where he also served as imaging director. Wherever Larry worked in the medical community, he was commended for his patient skills and his professionalism. A lifelong member of various animal rights groups, Larry was a consummate gardener, a creative chef and a loyal friend. Family and friends will remember Larry for his trenchant wit. He leaves behind his domestic partner of 39 years, Alvin W. Bowker of Viera, Fla.; his sister, Sharon Halula; his brother-in-law, Robert Halula; his nephew, Andrew Halula; and his niece, Lauren Halula, all of Boca Raton, Fla. He is also survived by several cousins in West Virginia; a paternal aunt, Leola Hall of Winter Haven, Fla.; and a paternal uncle, John Payne of Elk View, W.Va. He also leaves behind his beloved cat, Sophie. Those wishing to make a memorial contribution in Larry’s name may do so to the animal rights or animal support group of their choice. A commemorative celebration of Larry’s life will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 13, at his home in Viera, Fla.
