BANGOR, Maine — Bull Moose is expanding from music to books, according to a press release issued Monday.
The store has been under construction for six months to expand 7,000 square feet, making it the largest store in the 10-store chain. More than 13,000 books will be offered in 3,000 square feet of the space.
“The books will be priced aggressively, with almost all at 35 percent off list price,” owner Brett Wickard said in the release. “We want to prove that a local business can outcompete the big boxes and the Web stores. And we’re going to carry a wide variety of books that appeal to everybody — we’ll have books for young readers, older readers and everyone in between.”
Bangor was selected for the launch of the 20-year-old business’s expansion based on the store’s existing strong connection to its customers and its consistent growth over the years.
The decision to expand into books at a time when people question the vitality of print media in the wake of e-readers is a typical step for this company, which has managed to remain extremely successful for two decades by bucking trends, according to the release.
The chain’s sales of new and pre-owned DVDs, video games and CDs have grown year over year as the stores have continued to evolve based on customer interests.
The Bangor Bull Moose will celebrate its grand opening on Saturday, Feb. 13. The store is open during the construction and most likely will have a soft opening before the grand opening celebration.
The Bangor Bull Moose is located at 683 Hogan Road in the Maine Square Mall. It is open from 9 a.m. to midnight Mondays and 9 a.m.-11 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.
Wickard started Bull Moose in 1989 in Brunswick when he was a junior at Bowdoin College. What began as a makeshift store carrying only a few records has become the largest retailer of new and pre-owned music, movies and video games in Maine and Seacoast New Hampshire with 10 stores and more than 100 employees, according to the press release. Customers are encouraged to sell back their music, movies and games at any store location.
The stores also carry audio-video accessories and pop culture items including postcards and “Magic: The Gathering” gaming cards.
Customers can shop Bull Moose’s entire inventory 24 hours a day at www.bullmoose.com.
