Should Sen. Harry Reid be chastised for his comments?

A new insider book about the 2008 presidential campaign reports that Sen. Reid said of

then-candidate Barack Obama that he was “light-skinned” and did not speak with a “Negro dialect.” Critics say Mr. Reid would be labeled a racist were he a Republican.

Supporters say the senator was merely describing Mr. Obama and his appeal to mainstream voters. Which explanation rings true? Is this evidence that Sen. Reid is a racist? Is it evidence of a double standard in American politics? Or are Republicans

merely trying to score points on Mr. Reid, who is vulnerable in his bid for reelection? printed on July 24, 2017
