The first winter event of Maine’s celebration of the 75th anniversary of its state park system will provide residents and visitors a chance to sample winter recreational opportunities.

Officials at the Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands have scheduled a fun-filled day of ice fishing for kids and dog sledding for all Jan. 17 at Lake St. George State Park in Liberty.

A youth ice-fishing derby will run from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m., and dog sledding will be offered from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.

“This event was extremely popular last year and gave our park visitors a wonderful time,” said Will Harris, BPL’s director, in a press release. “Activities such as the ice-fishing derby show that our Maine state parks can be fun and rewarding for families and friends for all four seasons.”

The fishing derby was first held a year ago, while dog sled rides have been added for this year’s event.

“This is a great opportunity to go out with a registered Maine guide to go on a short dog sled ride,” said Gary Best, the BPL assistant regional manager.

Throughout 2010, the Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands, which operates under the Department of Conservation, is celebrating the 75th anniversary of the founding of the system. The system was established with the formation of the State Park Commission in 1935.

The BPL consists of 48 state parks and historic sites.

A year ago the ice-fishing derby drew 150 people, including 92 children, even though the event was staged during a snowstorm.

Entry fee for the derby: $1.50 for those ages 12-64, with those under 12 or over 64 participating for free.

All equipment will be provided, including bait. A hot dog and hamburger cookout will be served for no extra charge.

Dog sled rides will be provided by Song in the Woods guide service of Abbot. The suggested donation for a ride is $2 per person.
