BELFAST, Maine — A Maine man who caused his 9-week-old daughter’s death when he threw her to the ground in a fit of frustration at his Rockland home is going to prison for 16 years.

During Tuesday’s sentencing, a relative of the infant’s mother had to be restrained after charging at Robert Harford Jr., who pleaded guilty to manslaughter. WGME-TV says the hearing was delayed briefly before the judge imposed the prison sentence in Knox County Superior Court. Harford also must serve probation.

Harford’s daughter, Ava, died Aug. 19, 2008, of multiple blunt force head injuries two days after being taken unresponsive to a hospital. Harford initially told police he dropped the child, but later changed his story.
