A Millinocket man was arrested on multiple charges after a shoplifting incident at the Bangor Mall turned ugly.
The incident occurred shortly before 5 p.m. Wednesday in the Sears department store, while David Rich, 23, was shopping with Aericka Litalien, 22, of Bangor, and her 3-month-old infant, who was in a stroller, Bangor police Lt. Tom Reagan said Thursday.
A store loss prevention officer became suspicious and confronted Rich, who reportedly had hidden two pairs of gloves and a bottle of perfume in his clothing, Reagan said. Deodorant and a bottle of cologne also were found in the stroller, the lieutenant said. Reagan said the merchandise was valued at about $150.
Rich and Litalien were detained in an office until police arrived, Reagan said. When Bangor police Officer Doug Smith attempted to arrest Rich, he became uncooperative, engaging the officer in a scuffle and intentionally banging his head against a wall, punching a hole through the drywall, Reagan said.
Rich was charged with theft, criminal mischief and refusing to submit to arrest and then was taken to Penobscot County Jail. He since has been released on bail, Reagan said.
He said Litalien was charged with theft, though she was not arrested so that she could tend to her baby, Reagan said. (Dawn Gagnon, BDN)
