Reality television packing on pounds

We like our chicken fried, our doughnuts fresh and our pasta al dente. Not to mention we want our fast food fast, our morning coffee to go and our lunch microwaveable. It’s no secret that we love our food and have a tendency to be on the fluffy side, but apparently we like our reality TV with extra calories, too.

So far we’ve been inspired by those on “Biggest Loser” and watched plus-sized love blossom with “More to Love,” but now we’ve got something for viewers with a sweet tooth.

Bravo has announced a spinoff of “Top Chef” that will focus on pastries — “Top Chef: Just Desserts.” Casting for the show has begun and I’m hoping we’re talking about whipping up more than just cake and frosting. After all, we already have “Ace of Cakes” and “Cake Boss.”

Dessert traditionally has been a challenge for “Top Chef” contestants, so it should be interesting to see how this turns out. More than once it’s come down to that last course and a chef packing up the knives because of a poorly executed pastry.

Not a network to waste an opportunity for multiple spinoffs (just look at what they did with “Real Housewives”), Bravo also is working on a “Top Chef Junior” for teens and has a seventh season of the original in the works. I wouldn’t be surprised if “Top Chef: Gosselin” is next to show us all how to cook for a big family. Please, make it stop!

Speaking of Bravo spinoffs, the original “Real Housewives of Orange County,” which won’t actually include any original cast members by the end of the season, is set to air at 10 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 5. There’s a new lady behind the gates so be sure to check out a sneak peek of season five at www.bravotv.com. You’ll be surprised at what you’ll find and won’t be able to wait for the first episode.
