BANGOR, Maine — The League of Women Voters of Maine and the Bangor Public Library will host a Forum on Question 3, the repeal of school consolidation, at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21, in the library Lecture Hall.

Speaking for repeal will be Dr. Gordon Donaldson of The Maine Coalition to Save Schools. Donaldson is a professor of education at the University of Maine, where he teaches graduate courses on educational leadership and research. He has been active in statewide efforts in Maine to develop leadership at the school level, and more recently, in advocating for community schools. Donaldson was principal of Ellsworth High School and a teacher on North Haven and in Boston and Philadelphia.

The Maine Coalition to Save Schools is a group of 150 residents fighting a consolidation plan to reduce the number of school districts in Maine from 290 to 80 through use of the Maine veto referendum.

Speaking against repeal will be Newell Augur, a member of Maine People for Improved School Education, the organization leading the effort against Question 3.

The Vote No on 3 campaign launched in September. The group argues that the consolidation law saves taxpayers $36 million a year and creates an efficient school system.

Each side will be asked to answer the question, “If your position wins, what effect will that have on an individual student now in school?”

Written questions will be taken from the audience.

The public is invited to attend.
