Credit union resolves computer glitch issues

OLD TOWN, Maine — Computer hardware problems last week derailed online banking services for thousands of members of Penobscot County Federal Credit Union, which is headquartered in Old Town and has branches in Bangor and West Enfield.

President and Chief Executive Officer Steve Baillargeon said Wednesday that the malfunction was confined to the credit union’s internal computer system and required rebuilding certain components.

No member deposits were ever at risk, he said, and all regular transactions were processed by hand “the old fashioned way” while the computer system was out of commission. In addition, the credit union’s automated phone system was deliberately bypassed during the outage so anyone who called with questions about an account spoke directly with a staff member.

The problem was fully resolved by Tuesday morning of this week, Baillargeon said.

Some members may have experienced delays in payments deducted automatically from their accounts, he said, and the credit union is working with those individuals to resolve any associated fees or charges.

To show its appreciation for members’ patience during the outage, the credit union will host a “thank you” luncheon in September.

Penobscot County Federal Credit Union was chartered 41 years ago and has about 7,300 members and more than $43 million in assets.
