Second Maine horse dies from encephalitis

AUGUSTA, Maine — Health officials say a second horse in Maine has died of eastern equine encephalitis.

The horse was in the Waldo County town of Thorndike. That’s about five miles from Troy, where another horse was euthanized last week after being diagnosed with the virus.

Eastern equine encephalitis is transmitted through infected mosquitoes, who pick it up by feeding on infected birds.

State health director Dora Anne Mills says there are no reports of people getting the infection, but she is urging people and horse owners to take precautions to protect themselves from infected mosquitoes.
